What many people think is a healthy breakfast alternative is really nothing more than an unhealthy sugar ridden dessert. Do not let the "Whole Grain" labeling fool you either. You will find this labeling on many cereal boxes in your grocery stores. This is nothing more than a smoke and mirrors tactic by mammoth food corporations to make you think that you are eating healthy and making good choices. In truth, these corporations are concerned only with making a fat profit. What's very pathetic, greedy and sad is that these companies are not concerned one lick about your health and the fact that they are fueling the obesity crisis in America today. Make a habit of always checking the nutrition label for anything that you purchase. You will be surprised and horrified by the sugar content in most processed items on the market. Think for yourself. Do not let these corporations think for you.
This begs the question of how much sugar should you we be consuming daily?
The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends that Americans drastically cut back on sugar. Cutting back on sugar will significantly help in lessening the heart disease, diabetes and obesity epidemic that we are now facing. The AHA recommends no more than 24 grams of sugar for women and no more than 36 grams of sugar for men per day. Think about that for a minute. Starting your day with one bowl of cereal could potentially exceed your recommended daily allowance of sugar. Seriously friends, I want you to stop and reflect on that for a while. Now, think about what happens when you consume that breakfast cereal and then add in more breads, sodas, pastas, cookies, candy, chips and other sugar ridden junk into your daily diet. All of this unnecessary sugar is highly caloric and unused by your body. Simply put, it stores as fat.
Do your best to get your carbs and sugars from healthy fruits and veggies. The body will readily absorb and utilize these complex carbs, which naturally include fiber. Your body will adequately process these calories for fuel and not store them as fat. In truth, your body does not need to get carbohydrates from added sugar. There is a reason why sugar is called "White Death". It is killing us.
Did I mention that sugar makes you fat? The standard American diet is loaded with sugar. We are constantly bombarded with marketing everywhere. This mass marketing encourages us to blindly eat processed junk! Its' time to wake up friends. Educate yourself and fuel your body correclty. Think whole foods, organic and local, fresh fruits, nuts, veggies and healthy grains. You deserve it. You are worth it.
